First Public Solo Performances

I got to the show just in time. (I had to take the SAT1 that morning and then drive 5 straight hours to get there)! But it was definitely worth it! So here's the review (and I've got concert and backstage PICTURES also! Oh yeah, sorry to Erick Cole [Kmax's bass player] about not posting your picture but it didn't come out.):

Pete Stewart (electric guitar), brothers Lonnie (bass guitar) and Chad (drums) Chapin, and regular dcTalk electric guitarist Barry Graul took the stage first. They started warming up their instruments when Michael Tait appeared on the stage in a solid black outfit. The crowd was definitely happy to see him. With the band assembled, they played "Alibi," "Loss 4 Words," "All You Got," and "Spy" (all of which are supposed to be included on the Tait Band's debut album "Empty" releasing in July). The songs simply rocked! Pete Stewart and Lonnie Chapin did a great job singing backup vocals for Mike, and sometime between songs Michael introduced the band members, sharing some information about each (He mentioned that Lonnie's nickname was "Colgate"). One thing I noticed during their performance was that they had put a cover on Chad's drum set that had a picture of a mannequin from their "Empty" album photo shoot.

Next, several uniquely clad musicians I had never seen before appeared on stage and a familiar song began to play... ah yes! It's the song used years ago for Elvis Presley's introduction. It got louder and the crowd became excited waiting to see what was next. At last, Kmax strolled on to the stage in a plastic, khaki, plaid jacket (you'd have to see it) and "Return of the Singer" immediately began. Now, I'm really only sure of one of Kevin's band members' names (because I spoke with him after the show) but these names I'm about to tell you are my guesses based on album production credits on Kevin's website. Erick Cole was definitely the man on electric guitar, and I think it was Tony Levin on bass, Owsley and George Cochini also on guitar, Matt Chamberlin on drums, John Painter on keys, and Alisa Gyse on backup vocals. Now it gets really confusing because Kevin introduced the next 3 songs as simply "a song," "a love song," and "a rock song" (if I remember correctly)... Anyway, the songs rocked even though I can't tell you their names. Kevin closed with "Be." One thing I noticed about Kevin's set is that he now appears to have a logo of some sort. It was a white lightning bolt in a black circle (it appeared on the keys stand).

tobyMac's crew showed up last to round out the solo sets. I'm sure that Joanna Valencia (a new artist on Gotee Records) was the girl helping Toby with vocals, but the other band members I have no clue of. I think Barry Graul and Mark Townsend were out there on guitars and Dave Wyatt was on keys (and possibly Rick May on drums) but I do not know the names of the DJ or the 2 dancers that were also up there. (They may have been in the Gotee rap/hip-hop group Grits, but I'm really not sure). Toby started off with a surprise attach coming out from the crowd and crawling over the seats. He was rapping a song he'd made up just for concerts (not scheduled as of yet for his solo project) and he got the crowd involved ("When I say... you say... all the Jesus freaks say... woohoo"). He continued on stage and performed "Somebody's Watching Me" and then "Extreme Days." Throughout his set, Joanna sang vocals and his dancers kept on moving.

Finally, dcTalk took the stage (I think the crowd was the most pleased all night by this) and they opened with "Spirit In The Sky" (to my surprise and pleasure)! The band members on stage were (if I remember correctly) Mark Townsend (electric guitar), Dave Wyatt (keys), Rick May (drums), Erick Cole (electric guitar on a few songs... I think), Barry Graul (electric guitar), the DJ (unknown name), and the same man who played bass for Kmax's set (I'm guessing Tony Levin?). dcTalk proceeded to perform a souped-up "Jesus Is Just Alright" remix of some sort, followed by "In The Light," "Colored People," and a smooshed together (and very short) "What If I Stumble?" and "My Will." (The third verse of "My Will" was cut altogether). Next came a big treat for me since I thought this song was long gone from the concert set - "Say The Words" (the remixed NOW version)! dcTalk closed the show with "Supernatural" and "Jesus Freak," but returned for an encore of "40" (actually, it was a medley including "40," "He Has Made Me Glad," and "How Great Thou Art"). After the show, I went backstage for a few minutes... but that's a different story. It was sad to see the show end but it had been great! I encourage ALL dcTalk fans to catch a festival show this summer (which they plan to do in the same manner, as solo artists and as dcTalk) if possible and also to pick up the "Solo" EP. You'll be glad you did!
